Most 3-digit luggage locks leak their own secret. Scroll to take one apart, see why it opens in ten tries, then crack the practice lock yourself.

Act 1 โ€” the mechanism

What’s inside
the metal

Part 01

The wheel

Each digit you spin is a knurled ring. It looks like the whole story โ€” it isn’t. The ring is pinned to a second disc hiding behind it.

Part 02

The gate disc

Every disc carries one notch โ€” the gate. Rotate the wheel, and the gate rotates with it. One number, one gate position. That’s the whole secret.

Part 03

The latch bar

A spring-loaded bar rests against all three discs. It can only drop โ€” and release the shackle โ€” when all three notches face it at once. That single position is your combination.

Part 04

The leak

Cheap locks expose a peep hole under each wheel. The holes sit at a fixed factory offset from the latch โ€” and it’s the same offset for all three wheels. Find the holes, and you’ve found the code, just rotated.

Act 2 โ€” the method

Four moves,
watch them happen

Move 01

Flip it over

Turn the bag until you can see the underside of the wheels. A small hole hides beneath each one. Good light helps โ€” a phone torch is perfect.

Move 02

Find the three gates

Spin each wheel slowly until you can see down into its hole. Each wheel shows its gate at exactly one number. Get all three glowing at once.

Move 03

Read the front

With the gates aligned, the three digits on the front are your gate reading โ€” the real code, shifted by the factory offset. Write it down.

Move 04

Count forward

Try the reading. Then add 1 to every wheel and pull again: 764 → 875 → 986… Within ten readings, the notches sweep past the latch and the shackle pops.

Your turn Same lock, your hands now. Flip it, find the gates, count forward.

Try each code top-left to bottom-right. Tap a code to cross it off. One of these opens your lock.

Owner use only

This technique is for recovering access to your own luggage when the combination is forgotten. Opening a lock you don’t own, without permission, is illegal and unethical โ€” and these locks guard your bag from honest mix-ups, not from people who read pages like this one. Pick a new code you’ll remember, and consider a lock without exposed gates.
