A simple technique that works on most 3-digit combination locks
Recently while traveling, I was stuck with a locked suitcase and couldn't remember the combination. After searching online, I found a YouTube video (link here) that showed this technique. It worked perfectly, and I was able to open my suitcase within minutes!
I created this page to help others who might face the same issue and need a simple solution without damaging their luggage.
Most suitcase combination locks have wheels with internal "gates" or holes that need to align for the lock to open. By finding where these holes are visible from the back of the lock, you can systematically try a small number of possible combinations instead of all 1000 possibilities.
This technique is intended only for recovering access to your own luggage when you've forgotten the combination. Using this method on someone else's property without permission is illegal and unethical.
Turn your suitcase to see the underside of the lock mechanism where the number dials are. You should be able to see small holes under each dial wheel.
Rotate each dial until you can see all three holes aligned in a row from the back/underside. Each dial will only show its hole at one specific number.
When all three holes are visible from underneath, look at what numbers are displayed on the front of the lock and write them down. These numbers are your starting point.
Start by trying the combination you noted in step 3. If that doesn't work, rotate all three dials by one click in the same direction (either all +1 or all -1) and try again.
Example: If your aligned holes show 764:
Continue this pattern until the lock opens. One of these combinations will work!
Use this simulator to practice the technique step by step. You can see both the numbers on the front and the holes underneath the lock.
Try each combination in order. One of these will open your lock.
